Nintendo broadcasted their most recent Nintendo Direct on March 3, 2016, which focused on games that will be released in 2016 for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS consoles.
While it was full of new and interesting announcements of upcoming games, there was also an abundance of new details regarding amiibo. The Direct took off with updates on the highly anticipated Wii U title, Star Fox Zero. Players will be able to unlock a special Retro Arwing, which is identical to the starship used in the original Super Nintendo game, by applying their Star Fox amiibo. So far, Star Fox is the only amiibo that has a confirmed function for the game, but one can assume that the Falco figure will have compatibility in some way, shape, or form.
There was brief discussion on the Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card which comes bundled with first print editions of the upcoming Pokémon based fighting game, Pokkén Tournament for Wii U. The effects gained from the amiibo card will only be available until the player quits the game. This will require players to reapply their Shadow Mewtwo card with each gameplay session, so you might want to keep it handy.Nintendo announced a new game in the Mini Mario series launching on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, called Mini Mario and Friends amiibo Challenge. In this game, players will solve puzzles by using compatible amiibo. Each character has a unique power that will allow them to complete levels. Early access to the game will be available starting March 25, with the purchase with any amiibo character at Best Buy, GameStop, or Amazon. The game will be available to download for free on April 28, 2016. Regarding Animal Crossing, Series 4 of the Animal Crossing amiibo cards will be available June 10, 2016. These cards will release alongside the standalone amiibo figure of Isabelle, which was previously exclusive to the bundle of the Wii U game, Animal Crossing amiibo Festival. There will also be an alternate amiibo figure of Isabelle in summer clothing. Be sure to keep a checklist to know which cards you still need to collect! Kirby has a new game coming out in 2016 for Nintendo 3DS called Kirby Planet Robobot. Tapping an amiibo in this game will grant Kirby with special abilities. Specific amiibo characters will give Kirby powers based on their abilities. For example, using a Mario amiibo gives Kirby the blazing fire ability and utilizing a Link amiibo bestows Kirby with the agile sword ability. Tapping Kirby himself activates the Smash Bros ability which replicates his fighting style in the Super Smash Bros. series. Nintendo concluded their Direct with an announcement of a new Kirby based line of amiibo figures. The line will include new versions of Kirby, Meta Knight, and King Dedede, alongside amiibo newcomer, Waddle Dee. This line of amiibo grants Kirby with character specific costumes and their copy abilities. By using the new Kirby amiibo, players will be able to unlock UFO Kirby, which is only accessible in this game through this figure.
There is a lot of fun planned for 2016 and with E3 looming over the horizon, there can only be more surprises to expect from Nintendo. Don’t forget to mark your calendars!
